
Interaction on “Gender equality in radio journalism: challenge and opportunity” Lalitpur, 2012 July 8, Sunday
A half day interaction programme was organized by ACORAB today at its meeting hall on “Gender equality in radio journalism: challenge and opportunity”. The objective of interaction was to encourage gender justice promoters to be engaged in their movement through community radios and to collect idea in increasing females in career radio journalists.
The interaction was chaired by Mr. Lok Prasad Banjara, Vice Chairperson of ACORAB and moderated by Ms. Shashi Kala Dahal, Board Member of ACORAB and Coordinator of Gender and Social Inclusion Sub Committee. Thirty six gender justice activists representing various organizations took part and shared their ideas to improve the situation.
Welcoming the gests participants and highlighting the objective of the interaction, Mr. Rabindra Bhattarai, Executive Director of ACORAB, said that the interaction was organized with a view of identifying challenges for women to be a radio journalist, to collect ideas of broadening the scope of radio programmes in promoting the gender equality, particularly in community lives and to take suggestions and advice for incorporating programmes on ACORAB's plan.
Ms. Laxmi Basnet and Binu Subedi, programme producers of CIN presented situation of females in community radios in Nepal and challenging experiences as journalists.
Participants were concerned about the very low coverage of women's issues in the media as well as minimal numbers of women engaged in radio journalism. Participants suggested that Gender and Social Inclusion Policy is to be implemented by community radios to enhance women's participation in every layers of organizational structures. Participants suggested to expand radio programmes on the issues. They suggested ACORAB to give priority on capacity building of women journalists and encourage its members to recruit women in new appointments. They suggested that media workers should take voices of women equal to the man in every possible news stories where concerned persons are to be quoted.
